How to choose the best protein powder
Saturday, June 18th, 2011Everyone is looking for an edge when they hit the gym and it doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned professional or someone who hasn’t set foot in a gym for 10 years. If you can achieve results faster and safely by using a protein supplement then why not go for it? To help here are some tips for choosing the right product for you.
This should go without saying but if you get the chance you really should try a sample of the powder before you purchase it. Obviously this isn’t possible when buying online but if you’re at a specialist store they will usually have samples available. People often forget how important taste is, remember you could be taking this product on a pretty regular basis so make sure you like it.
One problem new people face with protein powders is getting used to drinking them. This is because a protein shake is essentially a meal in liquid form so it will fill you up. To help I like to add various fruits like apples and peaches along with ice to give the drink more volume.
This should go without saying but buying in bulk can save you much more money than you realise. This is especially true if you’re buying online and you have to factor in delivery. What it really comes down to is price per serving as this can be as much as 40% cheaper in a large 3kg tub compared to a single pouch.
The best advice I can give for the type of protein to go for is probably Whey protein, which is actually the most popular type. The reason so many people use it is that it absorbs into the body much faster than any other protein so it’s great for after a workout when you’re feeling tired. It is made from milk though so probably no suitable for people avoiding dairy products.
So those are my tips for finding the best protein powder for your needs, I hope they help no matter what your goals are!
